Shortly after Dr. David Silbert’s return from The American Academy of Ophthalmology Conference in Las Vegas, NV – where he was recognized for his participation in the Academy’s national Leadership Development Program – he departed for the 25th Annual International Congress of the Iranian Society of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Silbert was invited 18 months ago by Iran’s National Society of Ophthalmology to be a special keynote lecturer at the 25th Congress: presenting 5 talks and performing surgery cases while in the country. The meeting draws nearly 3000 ophthalmologists from Iran and throughout the Middle East. He was one of 18 internationally renowned experts invited as a guest speaker to the congress. The guest speakers – specialists in Glaucoma, Cornea, Retina, Oculoplastics and Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus – were drawn from Brazil, Canada, Egypt, England, Finland, and Japan, in addition to the 11 invited guests from the United States of America. Dr. Silbert educated local doctors on his groundbreaking ophthalmic techniques, including surgical correction of Strabismus, Nystagmus, orbital fractures and double vision. He also lectured on vision screenings and automated devices used to screen for Lazy Eye. As a leader in these fields, he was honored to share his knowledge with the doctors at the conference, who would not have been able to train with him otherwise.
Dr. Silbert spent an afternoon in surgery at Labbafinejad Hospital in Tehran where he performed 3 surgeries. The surgery was observed by a number of local doctors and trainees who wished to learn advance techniques in tear drainage surgery. Using an endoscope and performing the surgery from inside the nose, Dr. Silbert is able to eliminate the need for a skin incision when correcting tear drain obstruction in adults. Dr. Silbert was also able to show the local doctors how to utilize balloons during the procedure.
Following the conference, Dr. Silbert and the other invited speakers were taken on a tour in Iran visiting Shiraz, Persepolis, and Isfahan.
This is the second time Dr. Silbert had been asked to attend the conference and now with the opening of his new practice, Conestoga Eye, and improving international relations, he was able to attend. Of his experience, Dr. Silbert says, “I learned a great deal from my co-presenters and from my hosts at the meeting and hope that meetings like this will improve understanding between our societies.” Held in Tehran the week of December 14-18, the conference brought nearly 3,000 doctors together from across the globe.
Dr. Silbert is an internationally recognized and published pediatric ophthalmologist and leading cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid and lacrimal surgeon practicing in Lancaster, Mechanicsburg, and Carlisle. In addition to his specialty fields, his practice provides routine eye exams and contact lens fittings. Dr. Silbert has published more than 60 scholarly articles in peer reviewed scientific journals, has authored chapters and routinely presents at national and international meetings.
