Surgical Eye Treatment for Adults and Children

Conestoga Eye offers oculoplastic surgeries to both adults and children. Our surgeons are experienced in treating complex conditions with the utmost care, precision, and expertise.

Conditions that can require surgery:

  • Tear duct obstruction: Tear duct obstruction is a common condition that occurs when the tear ducts become blocked, preventing tears from draining properly. Our surgeons are trained to perform the latest endoscopic minimally invasive techniques to open up blocked tear ducts.
  • Ptosis (Droopy Eyelids): An eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure used to correct drooping eyelids and remove excess skin. This can help improve vision and create a more youthful appearance.

  • Ectropion: Surgery to correct the outwardly-turned eyelids
  • Entropion: Surgery to correct inwardly-turned eyelids

  • Chalazion and eyelid lesions: Chalazia and eyelid lesions can lead to redness, swelling, irritation, and/or infection of the eyes. Our surgeons can perform surgical procedures with laser technology to remove these growths and lesions.
  • Orbital fracture repair: If your child has experienced an orbital fracture (a break in the bones that surround the eye socket), our surgeons can help repair it with a reconstructive procedure.
  • Enucleation: In rare cases, enucleation (removal of the eye) may be necessary. Our surgeons have expertise in performing this delicate procedure and can assist you in connecting with an excellent Ocularist for your prosthetic fitting.
  • Transconjunctival Muellerectomy, left eye to repair ptosis of left upper lid.

Minimially invasive endoscopic dcr

How Dr. Silbert Surgically Approaches Tearing

The main advantage of Endoscopic DCR over Conventional DCR is that it is a minimally invasive procedure that does not require an external incision. Instead, it uses a small endoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light at the end) to access the blocked tear duct through the nose.

This results in less pain, less scarring, and a faster recovery time for the patient. In addition, the endoscopic approach allows for a better visualization of the nasal cavity and surrounding structures, which can result in better precision during surgery and lower risk of damage to nearby tissues.

Another disadvantage of Conventional DCR is that the skin incision may interfere with the placement of eyeglasses, making it difficult for the patient to wear glasses comfortably during the post-operative period. This is especially relevant for patients who rely on glasses for vision correction. In contrast, Endoscopic DCR does not involve any skin incisions and typically does not interfere with glasses placement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What procedure do you perform to treat droopy eyelids and eyebrows?

Ptosis repair surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure used to correct drooping of the upper eyelids or eyebrows that interfere with vision. It involves removing excess skin and tissue and strengthening muscles around the eyelid area. This procedure can help to reduce fatigue, improve vision, and restore a more natural-looking awake appearance to the eye area.

How do you surgically treat watery, tearing eyes?

At Conestoga Eye, we use scarless Endo DCR (extended endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy) to treat blocked tear ducts. During this procedure, a small incision is made inside the nostril and the bone and tissue between the nose and the tear sac are removed. This allows for drainage from the tear sac to flow freely into the nose and eliminates blockage. The procedure can often be completed in less than an hour with minimal scarring or discomfort. This procedure is often complemented with the placement of tear ducts stents.

Why might I need Mohs reconstructive surgery or Eyelid Surgery?

Mohs removal is a specific way to remove skin cancer, allowing for the least amount of good tissue to be removed while fully excising the cancerous area. Dr. Silbert and his team specialize in the reconstruction of these Mohs removal areas.

Dr. Silbert has completed hundreds of Mohs reconstructions over the years - rebuilding not only eyelids, but tears ducts as a result.

Diagnosing skin cancer around the eyelids starts with scheduling an appointment for a lesion you or your doctor think looks suspicious. Dr. Silbert is able to biopsy the area and our office can coordinate your removal and reconstructive surgery with partnered dermatologists in the area.
